Our Values

"How We Do What We Do — With Respect and Mana"

At ADIO Trust, we treat everyone with dignity and respect — no judgment, no stigma. Our peer team understands what it’s like and meets people where they’re at. Guided by Te Tiriti o Waitangi and a strong belief in health for all, we’re here to support safer, healthier lives across our regions.

The Values That Shape Our Work

Dignity and Respect

We respect all people’s rights to dignity, respect, empathy and understanding, regardless of their race, religion, culture, sexual and gender identity or health status.

Equity

We promote equitable access to healthcare for people who inject drugs through support and referral.

Empathy

Our staff understand the challenges of drug use and meets clients where they’re at.

Non-Judgment

We display zero tolerance for stigma and discrimination against people who inject drugs.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi

We embrace, respect and uphold the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Health Promotion

Services run by ADIO are based on the philosophy of health promotion outlined in the World Health Organisation’s Ottawa Charter.

Our Legacy

The Needle Exchange Programme (NEP) was established in 1988 to reduce the spread of blood-borne viruses. Since then, it has helped New Zealand maintain one of the lowest HIV rates in the OECD.

New Zealand was one of the first countries in the world to legalise and fund peer-based needle exchanges. The success of this approach has been recognised internationally and replicated in other countries.

Our Impact

  • Maintained low HIV rates nationally
  • Supported thousands of people through safer use and health referrals
  • Reduced stigma and opened access to care for people who use drugs
  • Made key contributions to the National Hep C Action Plan and HIV Strategy

“We don’t judge. We just support people to stay safer and come back. If they want to talk about housing or health or anything else, we’re here for that too.”
