Harm Reduction
"No judgement. Just care — harm reduction that meets you where you’re at."
Harm reduction is at the heart of everything we do. It’s a public health approach that meets people where they’re at — with no judgment, shame, or pressure to stop using.
It acknowledges that drug use happens. And that people who use drugs deserve access to care, safety, and support — just like everyone else.
What Harm Reduction Means at ADIO
- We provide clean injecting equipment to prevent infections.
- We offer advice on safer use, wound care, and overdose prevention.
- We distribute free Naloxone and drug checking strips.
- We listen without judgment and support people’s goals, whatever they are.
- We provide free testing for Hep C, HIV and syphilis, referrals and treatment.
“People who use drugs deserve the same respect, care, and opportunities as anyone else. It’s that simple.”
Why It Matters
Harm reduction saves lives. It improves health outcomes, reduces the spread of blood-borne infections, and connects people to care when they’re ready. It’s evidence-based, peer-driven, and rooted in human rights.
We follow the World Health Organisation’s Ottawa Charter and uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi — ensuring our services are equitable, inclusive, and focused on wellbeing.
Not Just About Equipment
Harm reduction also means:
Respecting autonomy and lived experience
- Fighting stigma and discrimination
- Offering practical support and health advice
- Being a reliable presence, no matter where someone is on their journey
“We neither condemn nor condone drug use — we support people to stay safer, healthier, and connected.”
Naloxone Saves Lives
Naloxone is a medication that reverses the effects of opioid overdose — and it’s available free from all our exchanges and through our courier service.
- It works by blocking opioid receptors in the brain
- It can restore breathing in minutes
- It’s safe to use and easy to carry
We offer injectable Naloxone kits, along with clear instructions and support. Our staff can show you how to recognise an overdose and how to respond quickly.
“If someone’s overdosing, Naloxone gives them a second chance. It gives us time to call for help.”
Carrying Naloxone doesn’t mean you’re expecting something to go wrong — it means you’re ready to help if it does. We encourage everyone who uses opioids — or knows someone who does — to carry a kit, as well as their friends and whanau.
You don’t have to explain why you want it. Just ask.
